A couple of weeks ago, like most workplaces, we here at Optimum Consulting acknowledged RUOK day? A mental health initiative where every second Thursday of September is designated as a day for people and organisations to reflect on their mental health. We were given a presentation by our GM of Consulting, Stephen Cushion and our Optimum Legal Practice Leader Rohan Tate. I myself found the presentation very eye-opening with some of the figures on mental health very confronting. It also had me thinking about the importance of mental health in the workplace. I thought in the spirit of RUOK Day I should share several ways to combat the stresses of a modern workplace.
1. Managing stress.
I am lucky because I work in an environment which is helpful and collaborative. I have worked in places where I could tell that it was not a good workplace. The great thing about RUOK Day is that it educates employees and employers about the importance of mental health. Nevertheless, work can be a stressful environment. The signs that you are in a stressful environment would be one where you have angst when waking up in the morning. Conversely, you can also feel fatigued at the end of the day. I have felt both of these things in the past and the flow on affect can interfere with your private and social life. It is important to manage your stress by taking time to yourself. Something as simple as taking a walk on your lunch break to get fresh air or just recharge your batteries.
2. Be honest with your leaders.
The theme for RUOK Day 2023 was “I’m here to hear”. An important message that applies to both peers and leaders. If you are having a tough time, be honest with your boss, team leader, manager etc., and recognise your need to take a step back and prioritise yourself. You will find that if you are open and honest, your leader will be more than understanding, and open to working with you to your benefit.
3. It can affect your work life Balance.
When your mental health is going poorly this can influence the work life balance that we are all trying to achieve. You don’t want to be thinking work at times when you shouldn’t. Conversely, you don’t want the distraction of your personal life to intrude on your workplace. This can be as simple as taking a break from your desk, have a coffee, and reset your clock. I have always been big with appreciating the little wins in both your professional and personal life, and I think it is by far the most important process to achieving a positive healthy mental outlook.
4. Don’t just listen to me.
This point isn’t anything special. I’m not an expert in this field or any field for that matter, but there are countless organisations and phone numbers you can call or reach out to for help. Most of these organisations are not-for-profit and are helped dearly by volunteers. These organisations; Lifeline, Beyond Bue and Kids Helpline, among others, deserve a shoutout not just for the terrific work they do for mental health in the workplace but also for their contribution to society in general.
