Imagine this, you’ve spent a lot of time searching the internet for job opportunities. You attended a lot of job interviews. And finally, the hiring manager calls and offers you a job.

You are about to sign the offer when you receive another call from another hiring manager offering you a job.

You feel giddy and excited.

You feel wanted and in demand.

But the big question is, which one will you choose? Which one is better?

To assess which is the better company to work for, you will need to look into the details of the job offers. Read and assess the offer thoroughly.

Whether you are choosing between two or three companies or just considering one offer, it is important to check every aspect of your job offer.

Receiving a job offer is an opportunity for you to assess whether you are willing to take on a career responsibility with one company for the foreseeable future.

Signing a job offer can dictate the course of your career – from how much you could earn, how much responsibility or service you will provide, and how much free time you could have in your life amongst other things. Make sure you are on board with everything that is offered.

So, before signing any job offers, here are some important things for consideration:

1. Professional growth

An important point to check is if the role offers professional growth.

Do they offer professional development training? Do they offer promotions internally?

Did you know that one of the major reasons employees stay in a company is the learning and career development they receive?

If you are looking to grow in your career, make sure your new role offers opportunities for growth.

2. Salary and compensation

The first thing to check is your base pay. Some companies may offer really great compensation but without benefits. While some may offer a not so high salary but with plenty of benefits in the form of bonuses and commissions.

When assessing salary offers, consider how much you are happy with, as well as the salary benchmark for the position you are considering.

Salary can be a very awkward topic during an interview.  It is better to do your own research so you won’t get lost when asked “What’s your expected salary?”, and then they can draft a job offer that suits your expectations.

3. Employee Benefits

Aside from the base pay, you should also consider if the company is offering extra employee benefits like health insurance, Birthday Leave and/or gym memberships. Some other benefits could also be car/fuel allowance, meal allowances, and work from home/hybrid set up. There may also be internet and electricity allowances.

Assess whether these benefits are reasonable and can make up for what your salary package may or may not include.

4. Work Schedule

Another thing that you need to consider when accepting a job offer is the work schedule.

Does the work schedule match your lifestyle? Does it require you to work weeknights/weekends and/or during holidays?

Check the work schedule offered to ensure it fits your lifestyle. Make sure you still have that work/life balance that suits you and your family.

If you accept a work schedule that does not fit your lifestyle, you may end up compromising your health, family or other important things, which may end up with you being unhappy with your employer and could see possibly wanting to quit.

5. Travel and commute

Did you know that according to the findings of The Real Australian Commute Report in 2022, the Australian commuter will travel for an average of 33km for 54 minutes per day with an average cost of $20 per day?

So, before accepting the role, check if the office location is suitable. If not, you could discuss if an offer of a hybrid or WFH setup is available.

These are just some of the important things to be considered when you receive a job offer. They can make or break your career and also be factors that keep you happy and satisfied.
